President John Dramani Mahama has voiced confidence in the future of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, stating that the current crop of players can deliver bigger results if they are kept together and given steady backing.
Speaking during a visit to the Ho Sports Stadium, President Mahama said the Black Stars outperformed expectations at the last tournament despite forecasts that they would not make it past the group stage.
“We must also begin to gear up for the next World Cup. The Black Stars did well; no one gave them a chance. Many predicted they would be knocked out in the group phase, but they went on to reach the Round of 32,” he said.
The President emphasized that keeping the present squad and ensuring consistency in the technical bench would be vital to building a team strong enough to compete for major titles, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
“I am confident that if we maintain this team and get the coach to remain with them, by the next AFCON and World Cup, we will have a team that can win either of those competitions,” he noted.
President Mahama further reiterated government’s dedication to investing in sports infrastructure to aid the progress and development of sports across the country.
