The Bank of Ghana will roll out a fresh set of cedi notes known as the Heritage Series to improve security, durability and design.
The Governor, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, disclosed this after the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
He said the notes will carry stronger anti-counterfeit features, last longer in circulation and display modern artwork celebrating Ghana’s culture, history and national pride.
Dr Asiama explained that the present designs have been in use for over twenty years, hence the need for an upgrade in line with changing technology and security standards.
“The upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced security features, improved durability, and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and Ghana’s aspirations,” he stated.
He said the series will better resist fakes, endure handling, cut currency management costs and also honour national heroes while projecting Ghanaian identity.
Old notes still valid
The Governor clarified that the launch does not signal a recall of current notes. Both old and new notes will circulate together as legal tender.
“There is no need for the public to rush to exchange or to withdraw existing notes solely because of the introduction of the new Heritage Series,” he assured, urging continued use of existing notes.
Launch set for November 3The Heritage Series will be officially unveiled on November 3, 2026, at Bank Square, Accra.
Dr Asiama appealed to the public, traders, businesses and banks to handle notes with care to maintain quality and lower replacement costs.
He cautioned against squeezing, scribbling on, stapling, spraying or turning notes into bouquets and decorations.
“Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes. It will reduce replacement costs for the central bank and it will support efficient currency management,” he said.
He described safeguarding the cedi as a collective duty and urged Ghanaians to welcome the new notes with pride.
