Comments delivered on behalf of the overlord of Bole, Bolewura Sarfo Kutuge Feso I, during the Savannah Regional leg of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) “Thank You Tour” have reignited political speculation surrounding the future ambitions of NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
The remarks were conveyed by Seidu Abudu Sampson, also known as Tingawura, during Mr Asiedu Nketia’s visit to Bole as part of his nationwide tour aimed at appreciating party supporters following the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections.
According to Tingawura Sampson, the Bolewura — who was unable to personally receive the NDC Chairman because of another engagement in Tamale — expressed gratitude for Mr Asiedu Nketia’s longstanding loyalty and support to President John Dramani Mahama throughout his political career.
He said the traditional ruler acknowledged the critical role played by Mr Asiedu Nketia in supporting President Mahama “from the beginning up to this point” and encouraged him to continue backing both the President and the NDC administration.
The comments attracted heightened attention when Tingawura Sampson suggested that those who help others attain high office are often blessed to reach similar heights themselves.
“Any son who supports a father to rise to the highest level will also receive prayers and blessings to rise to that same level, and possibly even surpass it in future,” he stated.
He further noted that the Bolewura believed Mr Asiedu Nketia’s dedication and sacrifices for the party and the country “would not go unrewarded,” adding that prayers and traditional blessings were being offered on his behalf.
The remarks have since triggered renewed debate within political circles, particularly amid growing speculation about succession dynamics within the NDC beyond President Mahama’s current administration.
Although Mr Asiedu Nketia has never publicly declared an intention to contest for the presidency, sections of the public and some political observers have increasingly linked his nationwide grassroots engagements and “Thank You Tour” to possible long-term political ambitions within the ruling party.
Critics and political opponents have also suggested that the tour may be serving as an early effort to position the veteran party strategist for a future presidential bid — claims that Mr Asiedu Nketia has neither confirmed nor directly addressed.
Popularly known as “General Mosquito,” Mr Asiedu Nketia remains one of the most influential figures in the NDC, having served in several key leadership positions, including General Secretary before becoming National Chairman.
His ongoing regional tour has largely focused on engaging party supporters, chiefs and opinion leaders, while expressing gratitude for the NDC’s return to power.
During the Savannah Regional leg of the tour, he visited and interacted with stakeholders in Salaga, Kpalbe, Buipe, Daboya, Damongo, Sawla and Bole.
