The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its decision to stage the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years, restoring the tournament’s traditional two-year cycle.
In a post on X, CAF announced that its Executive Committee had unanimously approved the return to a biennial schedule.
“The Confédération Africaine de Football (‘CAF’) Executive Committee (‘EXCO’) today unanimously decided that the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (‘AFCON’) will return to taking place every Two Years,” the statement said.
The decision follows an announcement by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cabo Verde, held from October 7 to 9, 2026.
At the conference, Dr Motsepe indicated that the Executive Committee would review its previous decision, taken last year, to move AFCON to a four-year cycle.
The unanimous approval formally reverses that decision and restores the competition’s two-year schedule.
However, CAF has not yet indicated which edition of the tournament will mark the beginning of the reinstated biennial cycle.
