The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after fulfilling his bail conditions. Wontumi’s legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, withdrew a motion seeking to review his GH¢50 million bail condition on Monday, June 2, a day before the scheduled hearing.

He was granted bail with two justified sureties on Wednesday, May 28, and his legal team confirmed that the bail conditions were met by Friday, May 30. However, his release was delayed due to the pending motion, which his lawyers claimed was filed without his consent.

After the withdrawal of the motion, Justin Kodua, the NPP General Secretary, announced Wontumi’s release, thanking Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, for his support. “I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released, he’s gone home to relax,” Kodua said.

Mr. Wontumi is expected to cooperate with ongoing investigations into allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, revealed that EOCO is leading the investigation, working to recover suspected proceeds of crime and collaborating with international law enforcement partners on a second strand of investigation involving an international organised crime scheme.
