The UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, has emphasized the importance of the Climate Action Agenda in driving real-world climate action and implementation.
Addressing the Global Climate Action closing event at COP30 in Belém, Brasil, on November 19, Mr. Stiell highlighted the progress made, including a “trillion-dollar charge into the clean energy and grids” and a global plan to quadruple sustainable fuel. He said, “We have said throughout this COP that the world is watching and willing climate cooperation to stand firm in a fractured world.”
He emphasised the need for multilevel governance and cooperation between governments and non-Party actors to accelerate implementation, saying, “The responsibility now lies with all of us – Parties and non-Parties, public and private sectors, national and subnational implementers – to deliver results fast, fairly, and at scale.”
Mr. Stiell urged stakeholders to close the gap between commitments and delivery, saying, “Because people everywhere deserve to have the benefits of climate action: better health, more resilient communities, greater security and prosperity. And because every moment of delay is far too costly.”
He concluded by thanking the Climate High-Level Champions and the COP30 Presidency, saying, “Count on me and my team to accompany you and future Champions in this journey to make this vision a reality.”
