The death toll from Friday night’s illegal mining pit collapse has been revised to nine, according to JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor.
The incident occurred at Atta Ne Atta in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region — not Manso Tontokrom in the Ashanti Region as initially reported.
Hospital authorities have clarified that one body previously included in the count was unrelated to the cave-in, reducing the confirmed fatalities from ten to nine.
Four injured miners remain on admission at St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital in Hwidiem, where medical staff say they are responding positively to treatment.
An unspecified number of miners are still believed to have been at the site when the pit collapsed. Rescue operations and investigations are ongoing as officials work to determine the full extent and cause of the tragedy.
The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers of illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, and the continuing challenges of enforcement and safety oversight in mining communities.
