Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai has dismissed allegations by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame that officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office denied legal representatives access to former National Food Buffer Stock Company CEO Abdul-Wahab Hanan and his wife.
Addressing journalists at the High Court in Accra on Thursday, May 7, Justice Srem Sai described the allegations as unfounded and misleading.
According to him, the former Attorney-General chose to publicly discuss the matter through the media instead of engaging EOCO officials directly over concerns relating to the re-arrest of his clients.
The Deputy Attorney-General argued that such actions risk creating confusion about due process and undermine established institutional procedures for addressing legal grievances.
The controversy follows the re-arrest of Abdul-Wahab Hanan and his wife, Faiza Sayyid Wuni, shortly after the Office of the Attorney General withdrew charges against them on the grounds of fresh evidence.
The couple, together with other accused persons, had initially been standing trial before the charges were discontinued.
However, lawyers representing the couple, led by Godfred Dame, alleged that EOCO officials denied them access to their clients after the re-arrest.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, Mr Dame claimed his junior colleagues who visited EOCO offices were unable to meet the detained individuals.
“They have been denied access to counsel. Junior colleagues of mine who are at EOCO say that as of about 11 o’clock, they have not been given access to them. They have not been allowed to see their clients,” he said.
Justice Srem Sai, however, rejected the claims and maintained that legal and institutional processes must be respected in handling such matters.
