The Government of Ghana has transferred GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, following directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.
The announcement was made by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department formally informed government that the amount had been deducted and transferred to the Fund in accordance with the President’s directive to political appointees.
At the launch of the Mahama Cares initiative last year, President Mahama pledged to donate six months of his salary to support the Fund. He subsequently directed political appointees to contribute one month of their salaries toward the programme.
The President also announced sanctions for appointees who failed to comply with the initial asset declaration deadline, directing that such officials forfeit three months of their salaries to the Fund.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that arrangements are currently being finalised to transfer the remaining tranche of funds, including deductions from appointees who defaulted on the asset declaration directive.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was established to support healthcare financing and assist vulnerable individuals in accessing medical care.
