Djokoto: Aŋlɔ Empire Holds Key to Ghana’s Next Economic Frontier

Ghanaian cultural theorist V. L. K. Djokoto has called for renewed national attention and investment in the Aŋlɔ Empire, arguing that the historic enclave has the potential to evolve into a major economic and cultural hub.

Located along the south-eastern coast of the Volta Region, Aŋlɔ is defined by its unique geography — bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and a მშვიდ lagoon — as well as its deep historical roots. According to Djokoto, these natural and cultural assets position the area as a strong candidate for transformation into a modern industrial port city, tourism destination, and financial services centre.

“We must preserve Aŋlɔ, our history and our future,” he said, emphasising that development should not come at the expense of cultural identity. Instead, he argues that heritage and progress must work together to drive sustainable growth.

Djokoto believes Aŋlɔ could also emerge as a hub for Africa’s growing start-up ecosystem, combining eco-conscious development with commercial innovation. He points to its coastal advantage, tourism potential, and appeal to emerging businesses as key factors that could fuel long-term prosperity.

Describing himself as a centrist with both modernist and traditionalist leanings, Djokoto maintains that rural Ghana requires bold socio-economic reforms. He sees regions like Aŋlɔ as models for a new approach to national development — one that blends cultural preservation with entrepreneurial ambition.

He further noted that interest in Aŋlɔ’s future is already expanding beyond Ghana, attracting attention across Africa and internationally. However, he stressed that realising this vision will depend on sustained investment, strategic planning, and strong political will.

Djokoto currently leads D. K. T. Djokoto & Co, a multi-family office with interests in real estate, rural banking, media, and entertainment. He is also the author of Revolution and the play Afro Gbede, and has been featured in international and local media.

For Djokoto, the message is clear: Aŋlɔ’s transformation is not just possible — it is overdue, and its success could redefine the trajectory of rural development in Ghana.
