A motorist lost his life in the early hours of Wednesday after a collision involving a truck and a saloon car at the Ako Adjei Interchange in Accra.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the fatal accident occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. and involved a KIA Rhino truck with registration number GE 1120-15 and a Zedrive saloon car bearing registration number GW 6334-26.
According to the Service, a distress call was received at approximately 1:16 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of a rescue team from the GNFS Headquarters. The team, led by Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADO I) Yussif Yakubu, arrived at the scene within six minutes.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the driver of the saloon car trapped inside the severely damaged vehicle. Medical personnel who assessed the victim confirmed that he had died at the scene.
Rescue officers subsequently launched an extrication operation to recover the body. The operation involved removing sections of the wrecked vehicle, including the driver’s door and steering wheel, before the victim could be safely retrieved. The exercise was completed at about 2:14 a.m.
Preliminary findings suggest that the saloon car rammed into the rear of a truck that had reportedly broken down and was stationary on the road at the time of the crash.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Ghana National Fire Service has renewed calls for motorists to observe essential safety measures whenever their vehicles develop faults on the road. The Service advised drivers to immediately place reflective warning triangles or other visible warning signs behind disabled vehicles, particularly during nighttime hours, to alert approaching motorists.
The GNFS noted that such precautions can significantly reduce the risk of secondary crashes and help save lives on the nation’s roads.
The Service also expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and urged all road users to exercise caution and comply with road safety regulations at all times.
