The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ablekuma District, has warned residents of Manhean and surrounding areas against “phase jumping” on ECG cables.
Phase jumping occurs when one or more of the three phases of electricity supply goes off, and residents attempt to restore power by switching to another live phase, often with an electrician’s help.
According to the District Manager of ECG, Ablekuma, Samuel Andoh, who issued the warning after some residents from Manhean stormed the district office and complained about daily power outages, phase jumping was a hazardous and ineffective practice, and has the potential of damaging ECG transformers.
“This practice solves nothing as it rather loads another phase, transferring the phase off problem to another line,” he explained.
Instead, he advised the residents who experience phase off to call the Ablekuma ECG fault lines to report the issue and have the phase restored properly.
While assuring the said residents that the ECG Ablekuma District will fix their problem, he entreated them to arrest anybody who is not a worker of ECG but found climbing their electrical poles.
“It’s wrong and an offense for those unqualified electricians, known as Goro boys, to climb our poles and engage in phase jumping due to phase outages. You should assist the ECG by ensuring such individuals are apprehended and held accountable,” he underscored.
Mr. Andoh also urged residents to mobilise themselves against these practices. He assured them that the Ablekuma ECG District was committed to sensitising residents on the dangers of illegal practices like phase jumping.
Additionally, he cautioned against power theft through illegal connections, warning that anyone caught will face the consequences.
