Fidelity Bank Ghana has rewarded Emmanuel Appiah Boateng with GH¢10,000 in recognition of his honesty after he returned GH¢4,000 he found at one of the bank’s ATMs.
The gesture comes after Mr Boateng, an unemployed graduate and father of four, discovered the cash in the tray of an ATM at Fidelity Bank’s Oyarifa branch in April and chose to report it rather than keep it.
For nearly nine months, Emmanuel had been searching for employment while struggling to support his family. Like many unemployed graduates, he had been relying on limited resources and support from relatives while hoping for an opportunity to improve his circumstances.
On the day of the incident, he had visited the ATM using his wife’s bank card to withdraw money for urgent family needs. After finding a nearby ATM out of service, he decided to try another machine at the bank’s Oyarifa branch.
It was there that he discovered GH¢4,000 left behind by another customer.
Faced with a difficult choice at a time of financial hardship, Mr Boateng decided to do what he believed was right.
“I immediately called the Fidelity helpline to report it,” he recalled.
Following guidance from the bank’s Customer Contact Centre, he secured the money and kept it safe over the weekend. On the next working day, he returned to the branch and handed over the full amount to bank officials, enabling the money to be traced and returned to its rightful owner.
Staff at the Oyarifa branch praised the act, describing it as exceptional, particularly at a time when many households continue to face economic pressures and rising living costs.
According to bank officials, Mr Boateng’s decision stood out because of the personal challenges he was facing at the time.
For Emmanuel, however, the choice was driven by principle rather than circumstance.
An alumnus of Opoku Ware School, he holds a master’s degree in Cybersecurity, a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, and a professional certification in Project Management.
He later shared the experience with members of his church, Faith Life Family Assemblies of God at Oyarifa Gravel Pit in Accra.
In recognition of his integrity, Fidelity Bank presented him with a cash reward of GH¢10,000.
In a statement, the bank commended Mr Boateng for demonstrating exceptional honesty and civic responsibility.
“Mr Boateng found GHS 4,000 at one of the Bank’s ATMs and immediately contacted our Customer Contact Centre, ensuring that the money was returned to its rightful owner,” the statement said.
“At a time when integrity is often spoken about, his actions served as a powerful reminder of its value. We congratulate Mr Boateng and celebrate the character and honesty he has demonstrated.”
While the reward exceeded the amount he found, many observers say the significance of Emmanuel’s actions goes beyond the financial recognition.
In a period often dominated by stories of fraud, corruption and self-interest, his decision has been widely viewed as a reminder that integrity remains an important value in society.
For Emmanuel Appiah Boateng, honesty was not simply an ideal but a choice made during a period of personal hardship. His actions have since become an example of how character is often revealed not in moments of comfort, but in moments of difficulty.
