The Adentan Municipal Chief Executive, Ella Esiman Nongo, has confirmed that three people died in the recent floods that ravaged parts of Accra. The fatalities occurred in Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon, following nearly three hours of continuous rainfall that submerged major roads and cut off access to several communities.
Madam Nongo attributed the flooding to poor drainage and indiscriminate development, stating, “Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we’re facing.” She called for stricter enforcement of building regulations and urgent structural interventions to address the root causes of Accra’s perennial flooding.
“If we don’t tackle the indiscipline in our building practices and enforce the rules, these tragedies will keep recurring,” she warned. The MCE’s comments highlight the need for authorities to address the city’s drainage issues and unregulated urban development to prevent future flooding disasters.
Emergency teams managed to rescue most stranded residents, but many communities remain at high risk due to the city’s poor infrastructure. Authorities are expected to conduct assessments and coordinate relief efforts for affected families.
