Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has stepped down from the Council of State, sources close to the issue hinted, ending her role on the president’s top advisory panel.
Sophia Akuffo, who headed the judiciary between 2017 and 2020, reportedly tendered her resignation last year.
She has not been present at any Council sessions since submitting the letter.
Neither Sophia Akuffo nor the Office of the President has released a statement on the move.
The factors behind her departure remain undisclosed. The Council of State is a constitutionally mandated body that counsels the president on key national matters. It is made up of elected delegates and appointed figures representing regions nationwide.
Her withdrawal comes after a tense episode that shook the judiciary. During an April 2025 vote by the Council on whether a prima facie case existed against then Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, 30 of 31 members backed the motion.
Sophia Akuffo was the only member who abstained, and her reasons were never made public.
