The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has initiated an internal inquiry into the events linked to the death of a second-year undergraduate, whose remains were found at Hutchland Beach on Friday morning.
The victim, named as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, was verified to be a university student after law enforcement notified the school upon finding the body. In a release from the Directorate of Public Affairs, the university stated it is collaborating closely with the UCC District Police Command to determine the sequence of incidents that led to her death.
The administration noted its actions are being managed through the Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs, which is supporting police with identification processes and the gathering of pertinent details.
The university reported that the Dean of Students was promptly notified after police got information suggesting the deceased attended UCC.
Authorities are also aiding contact between officers and the grieving family, who came to the station on Saturday, June 13, 2026, to confirm the identity.
Management added that counseling and additional assistance are being offered to the late student’s roommate, classmates, and the broader campus community impacted by the tragedy.
Meanwhile, officers have assumed responsibility for the criminal probe and plan to obtain a coroner’s document on Monday, June 15, 2026, prior to an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.
Initial reports show Ms. Avinu, who resided in a private hostel in Amamoma, was last spotted on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, around 7:00 p.m.
Her roommate allegedly informed investigators that she got a call, exited the room in casual wear, and never came back. Both the university and police have appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unconfirmed reports, cautioning that false information could disrupt active investigations and intensify the pain of the grieving family and campus community.“
The University Management has been duly informed, and appropriate support measures are being extended to the family, the affected roommate, colleague students, and course mates during this difficult period,” Acting Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs, Dr. Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, stated.Inquiries remain underway.
