The Ministry of Defence says four soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) are recovering after sustaining minor injuries during the recent attack on the Ghanaian contingent in southern Lebanon.
Providing an update on the situation, Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi said the injured soldiers are in stable condition and receiving medical care.
He explained that while four of the troops suffered minor injuries and are recovering well, one soldier who sustained serious injuries to both legs and the hip was evacuated to Beirut for urgent treatment.
“The soldier was successfully evacuated to Beirut, where he underwent surgery this morning. He is stable and recuperating,” Mr Genfi said.
The deputy minister also disclosed that 15 Ghanaian officers lost all their personal belongings after a fire outbreak destroyed their accommodation during the incident.
Ghana has since lodged a formal complaint with the United Nations, urging all parties involved in the conflict to respect the safety and operational space of peacekeepers deployed in the region.
According to Mr Genfi, the complaint highlights the obligation of parties in conflict zones to ensure the protection of personnel operating under the UN peacekeeping mandate.
He further revealed that Ghana has received expressions of solidarity from international partners following the incident.
Mr Genfi said France has also raised concerns about the attack at the UN headquarters, noting that French peacekeepers are similarly deployed in Lebanon.
He disclosed that France’s Minister Delegate to the Minister of Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, Alice Rufo, contacted him by telephone to convey support and solidarity with Ghana.
Mr Genfi said Ghana appreciates the gesture and assured that the government is taking all necessary measures to safeguard Ghanaian troops serving under the UN mission.
Ghana remains one of the long-standing contributors to UN peacekeeping missions and continues to maintain a strong presence in the Lebanese operation aimed at preserving stability in the region.
