The government has launched the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative to support schoolgirls’ health and education. President John Dramani Mahama emphasized the need to address barriers girls face due to menstruation during his maiden State of the Nation Address.
The programme aims to ease financial burdens on families, improve school attendance, and enhance girls’ overall health and well-being. By providing essential menstrual hygiene products, the initiative seeks to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
The launch event in Accra was attended by key stakeholders, including ministers, policymakers, education experts, and school representatives. Stakeholders believe the programme will significantly contribute to increased attendance and retention of girls in schools, helping to close the gender gap in education and empower young women across the country.
The initiative aligns with President Mahama’s vision of promoting gender equality and ensuring access to quality education for all, regardless of gender or background.
