The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has projected a sharp increase in prices of petrol, diesel and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) at the pumps from Wednesday, September 16.
According to COPEC, petrol will go up by 4.24 per cent, while diesel will see a steeper rise of 10.23 per cent in the second pricing window of September.
LPG is also expected to increase substantially, projected to sell at about GH¢15.32 per kilogramme.
In its forecast dated September 13, 2026, COPEC blamed the anticipated hikes mainly on rising international crude oil and refined product prices. It noted that global crude prices climbed from US$89.30 to US$103.07 per barrel within the period.
This is happening despite a slight strengthening of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar, with the local currency improving from an average interbank rate of GH¢11.5166 to GH¢11.4830 per dollar at the close of the window.
COPEC said the cedi’s gain represents a marginal 0.29 per cent appreciation against the dollar.
Its analysis indicates that the international Free on Board (FOB) price of petrol rose from US$1,136.50 to US$1,251.07 per metric tonne, a jump of 10.08 per cent.
After factoring in the cedi’s marginal appreciation, COPEC projects petrol could sell at GH¢16.26 per litre at retail. This would be a 4.24 per cent increase over the current average price of GH¢15.60 per litre.
Based on its projection with an estimated ±5 per cent margin, COPEC expects petrol to sell between GH¢15.44 and GH¢17.08 per litre in the next pricing window.
Diesel is set to record a sharper jump.COPEC said the FOB price of diesel increased from US$1,250.50 to US$1,404.73 per metric tonne, representing a 12.33 per cent rise.
After accounting for the 0.29 per cent appreciation of the cedi, COPEC projects diesel will sell at GH¢19.07 per litre in the upcoming window. That projected price reflects a 10.23 per cent increase from the current mean price of GH¢17.30 per litre.
