Ga-Odumase In Turmoil After Police Back Controversial Chief Installation

Ghanaian RADAR can report that tension is brewing in Ga-Odumase after the controversial installation of Sowah Odootei as Chief, flouting court orders and tradition. Residents in the Ga community accused land guards and complicit police officers of forcibly imposing an illegitimate ruler.

Elders and kingmakers insist Nii Achia Kwablah Asamani II (Nii Amardey Asamani) is the lawful Chief, installed by the Asamani We (Family). They warned that any other claim threatens peace and stability in the area.

The crisis deepened when Odootei Sowah—backed by armed enforcers from the notorious “UN Land-Guards,” a group accused of terrorising lawful landowners, and police—defied a 2023 court order by Justice Emmanuel Ankamah, barring such actions.

Despite the ruling, his installation proceeded on June 12, 2025, under Amasaman Divisional Command protection, sparking fury among locals.

Witnesses say police officers not only guarded the unlawful event but actively participated, ignoring both the court and the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) directives.

Sources revealed that Odootei Sowah was a close confidant of the late Chief, Nii Actual II, managing the palace during his medical travels. Critics say he’s exploiting this link, aided by unauthorised figures, to seize power illegally.

“Odootei isn’t from any of the four ruling clans. He can’t even be a family head, let alone chief,” a kingmaker stated. A July 2024 letter from the Numo Apumah Family confirms this, declaring his authority “null and void.”

The ceremony allegedly had support from Sempe Stool elders—seen as outsider meddling. Even the IGP’s orders to halt it failed, with the Amasaman Divisional Commander allegedly ignoring directives and colluding with land guards.

Fears of violent clashes are rising, with locals demanding urgent government intervention. Leaders urge calm but warn that continued disregard for law and tradition could plunge the area into deeper unrest. Some youths now threaten to “take the law into their hands,” seeing the defiance as a survival-of-the-fittest battle.
