Galamsey Fight: Catholic Bishops Demand Emergency Declaration

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has urged President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency in areas devastated by illegal mining, known as galamsey.

In a strongly worded pastoral message, the bishops warned that galamsey was causing irreparable harm to the environment, public health, and governance. “The situation is not a routine challenge to be managed with half-measures; it is a national emergency requiring decisive, extraordinary response,” they stressed.

They condemned the environmental destruction, citing alarming figures on river pollution. “To desecrate creation through galamsey is not only an offence against neighbour; it is a grave sin against God Himself, the Creator and Owner of all,” the statement read. They also highlighted the human toll, including farmers losing livelihoods, children abandoning school, and communities exposed to serious health risks.

“Galamsey has become a cancer in our national soul. It corrodes politics, corrodes governance, and corrodes conscience,” the bishops said, criticizing politicians, officials, and security personnel who have been complicit in the illegal activities. “The hour is late. Delay is betrayal. Now, not tomorrow, not later, is the time to act,” they warned.

The bishops called for a comprehensive national strategy, including revising mining laws, establishing special courts, and forming a task force to tackle corruption. “We appeal to President Mahama to show the courage of leadership. His government must prosecute not only the poor but also the powerful; not only the weak but also the well-connected,” the statement concluded.
