A high-powered government delegation, including the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), is expected in Obuasi as authorities prepare to reopen Obuasi Senior High Technical School to continuing students.
The visit comes nearly three months after violent student protests forced the school to shut down following allegations of sexual misconduct against its headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, who has since been suspended.
The allegations involve 19 female students and were brought to public attention through an investigative documentary by JoyNews journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, titled Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow.
The revelations sparked widespread public concern over student safety and welfare, prompting protests that disrupted academic activities and led to the school’s closure.
The planned visit by the delegation comes as authorities take steps to facilitate the resumption of academic activities for continuing students.
The reopening is expected to mark a significant step towards restoring normalcy at the school following the controversy, which has intensified calls for accountability and stronger safeguards to protect students from sexual misconduct and abuse.
