Ghana joined other member states of the Commonwealth of Nations on Monday, March 9, to mark the 2026 Commonwealth Day with a flag-raising ceremony at the Forecourt of the State House.
The event was held under the theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” which emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and solidarity among member states to tackle global challenges while promoting economic growth, sustainable development, and youth empowerment.

Addressing the gathering, Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the Commonwealth’s core values of democracy, peace, good governance, human rights, and multilateral cooperation.
He highlighted Ghana’s contributions to international peace and security and stressed the need for continued collaboration among nations to address emerging global challenges.
Mr Muntaka also outlined Ghana’s priority areas within the Commonwealth framework, including climate resilience, digital transformation, and youth empowerment, calling for collective action to build a more inclusive and prosperous global community.

A message on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, was delivered by the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, Christian Rogg.
In the statement, the monarch urged member countries to work together to safeguard the planet, support young people, and foster a sustainable and prosperous future.

The message further highlighted the need for stronger cooperation on climate change, sustainable development, and harnessing the potential of the Commonwealth’s youthful population.
John Obeng Apea, Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council in Ghana, emphasised the importance of strengthening economic partnerships among member states.

He described the Commonwealth as a voluntary partnership of nations united by shared values, including democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, and noted that trust, cooperation, and innovation are essential for advancing inclusive development.
As part of the commemoration, a photo exhibition was mounted to showcase Ghana’s engagement within the Commonwealth.

The ceremony was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, representatives of international organisations, religious and traditional leaders, and personnel from the security services.
