Ghana’s economy expanded by 7.5% in January 2026, according to the Ghana Statistical Service, signalling sustained economic momentum at the start of the year, though slightly below the 8.2% growth recorded in January 2025.

Data from the Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG) shows that the services sector remained the primary driver, growing by 9.6% and contributing 54.3% to overall economic output.

The industrial sector followed with a 7.2% expansion, accounting for 29.0% of growth, while agriculture recorded the slowest pace at 4.5%, contributing 14.0%.

Government Statistician Dr Alhassan Iddrisu noted that the strong performance of the services sector reflects its increasing dominance in the economy, pointing to a gradual shift towards a service-led growth model.

However, the data highlights an uneven growth pattern across sectors. The relatively modest expansion in agriculture raises concerns about productivity in a sector critical for employment and food security. Similarly, while industry recorded positive growth, there remains room to enhance value addition and output.

Experts suggest that sustaining this economic momentum throughout 2026 will require a balanced approach—strengthening industrial development, improving agricultural productivity, and leveraging continued growth in the services sector to build a more resilient economy.
