The head of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, has called on Parliament to set aside process disputes and make sure the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, reaches the President for approval.
Appearing on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, June 2, he said Ghanaians chose MPs to enact laws for the country and expect them to fulfill that duty.
“Ghanaians elected wise, intelligent men and women to go to Parliament to legislate and to make rules and laws for our nation, and that is the only thing we expect from Parliament,” he said.
His remarks follow a clash over the anti-LGBTQ bill after Speaker Alban Bagbin instructed the House to review the legislation, pointing to the need to safeguard national interest and uphold proper procedure.
Most Rev. Gyamfi said the public is not focused on Parliament’s internal rules, noting that citizens mainly want legislators to pass laws that match public expectations.
“We are not interested in their procedures and those things. We are interested in Parliament codifying what we have already sent them and to do just that and to put the bill on the desk of the President of Ghana so that he appends his signature,” he stated.
The comments come after Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, argued that Parliament observed all required steps in approving the bill and maintained that the Speaker cannot overturn a decision already made by the House.
