The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended President John Dramani Mahama, the government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the successful two-day National Clean-Up Exercise held on July 10 and 11.
The exercise was declared following floods that affected seven regions, “claiming lives, displacing families, destroying homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.”
In a statement, the GJA described the nationwide campaign as “timely and necessary” and “largely successful in mobilising citizens, institutions and communities towards restoring environmental cleanliness.”
The Association particularly praised President John Dramani Mahama for “demonstrating exemplary, practical and inspiring leadership by personally participating in the clean-up exercise.”
It said his decision “sent a powerful message that environmental sanitation is a shared national responsibility.” GJA President, Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, joined President Mahama and thousands of volunteers, “reaffirming the Association’s commitment to promoting national development, environmental sustainability and responsible citizenship.”
The GJA also applauded the Ministry of Local Government, security services, traditional authorities and community volunteers “whose coordinated efforts ensured the success of the exercise.”
The Association reserved “special commendation for the Ghanaian media” for educating the public and mobilising communities.
It urged journalists to “keep sanitation, environmental protection, climate resilience and disaster preparedness high on the national agenda.”
The GJA further lauded Zoomlion Ghana Limited and Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong “for their immense contribution to the success of the exercise,” noting the “massive deployment of sanitation personnel” and equipment.
“While celebrating the success of the exercise, the GJA reminds all Ghanaians that national cleanliness cannot be achieved through occasional clean-up campaigns alone. It requires a continuous change in attitudes and behaviour,” the statement said.
The Association called on citizens to embrace environmental responsibility to build “a cleaner, healthier and more resilient Ghana.”
