The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has rejected claims that vessels operating in Ghana’s waters are not being monitored, insisting that its vessel monitoring system is fully operational.
The Authority said it maintains 24-hour surveillance of Ghana’s maritime domain through its maritime domain awareness tools, which enable it to continuously track vessels operating within the country’s maritime jurisdiction.
The GMA was responding to comments made by Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
According to the Authority, the comments suggested that its vessel monitoring system was ineffective and that vessels sailing within Ghana’s waters were not being adequately monitored.
The GMA described the claims as “false” and “misleading,” saying they did not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana.
“The GMA categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana,” the Authority said in a statement.
The GMA explained that its maritime surveillance systems are also used to monitor and protect critical offshore infrastructure, including oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.
It added that standard operating procedures are used to track vessels, verify their identities and assess their compliance with applicable maritime requirements.
The Authority said the monitoring system plays an important role in maritime safety, security and environmental protection.
It further rejected the suggestion that vessels operating within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction are not monitored.
“The Authority continues to use its maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of vessels in Ghana’s maritime domain,” it stated.
The GMA reaffirmed its commitment to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests.
It urged the public to disregard the claims and rely on official communications from the Authority for information on vessel monitoring and maritime surveillance.
