The government has announced a comprehensive support package for Ghanaians being evacuated from South Africa following ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals.

In a public notice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities assured affected citizens that measures had been put in place to ensure their safe return and smooth reintegration into society.

According to the statement, all Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa will benefit from a range of assistance programmes aimed at helping them rebuild their lives upon arrival in Ghana.

As part of the immediate relief measures, returnees will receive a “Welcome Home Financial Package” from the government.

The evacuees will also be provided with transportation support to enable them travel to their respective destinations across the country after arriving in Ghana.

In addition, the government said it would offer a reintegration allowance to support affected persons as they adjust to life back home after leaving South Africa under difficult circumstances.

Recognising the emotional and psychological toll of the attacks, the Ministry further announced that free psychosocial support services would be made available to all returnees.

Authorities also disclosed that evacuees would be enrolled into a special database intended to connect them with employment opportunities and startup support programmes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the intervention as part of the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad and providing assistance during times of crisis.

“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the first batch of 300 Ghanaians living in South Africa is expected to be evacuated through a special chartered flight scheduled for Thursday, May 21.
