Gov’t Reaffirms Social Protection Push As Gender Minister Engages World Bank

The government has renewed its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s social protection systems following renewed engagement with the World Bank.

The assurance came during a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, by Mr Robert S. Chase, the World Bank’s Social Policy Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, who is in Ghana to deepen collaboration on key social interventions.

The meeting focused on expanding cooperation between the government and the World Bank, particularly in the rollout of programmes under the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project 2. These include the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash transfer programme and ongoing support to the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

Dr Lartey highlighted the growing impact of LEAP, noting that the government is scaling up the number of beneficiary households from 350,000 to 400,000 to reach more vulnerable populations.

She underscored the need for stronger partnerships, including greater private sector involvement, to sustain and expand social protection initiatives. The Minister also assured that measures are being put in place to support beneficiaries as they transition out of such programmes.

On the policy front, she pointed to progress on key legislative frameworks, including the Social Protection Act and the Affirmative Action Act, aimed at strengthening coordination and improving outcomes within the sector.

Mr Chase reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to Ghana, stressing continued support for programmes targeted at improving the livelihoods of vulnerable groups.

The engagement highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen social safety nets and advance inclusive development across the country.
