The Ghana Scholarships Authority (GSA) has confirmed that government has disbursed first-quarter funds to the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom to start settling outstanding scholarship arrears for Ghanaian students.
The Authority said the move was aimed at addressing delays in stipend and tuition payments that have hit several Ghanaian beneficiaries enrolled in various UK institutions.
In a statement signed by Ghana Scholarships Authority Director-General, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, and released on Thursday, April 16, the Authority recognised the concerns of affected students and apologised for the disruption caused by the delays, assuring that measures were underway to return payment schedules to normal.
It clarified that the released funds were meant to meet the financial commitments of beneficiaries and ease pressure on students to ensure their academic programmes continue without interruption.
The Authority further indicated that the funds will go through required administrative and public financial management procedures before payments hit students’ accounts in the shortest possible time.
Government, it stated, remained dedicated to the welfare of Ghanaian students abroad and was collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure swift processing of all unpaid amounts while avoiding future delays.
The Ghana Scholarships Authority also restated its pledge to tighten internal systems to boost efficiency in scholarship management and secure timely disbursement of funds going forward. It appealed to beneficiaries to stay calm and focus on their studies as work continues to clear all outstanding obligations.
