The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has cautioned that it will resume its strike if the government fails to fulfill its commitments regarding improved conditions of service. Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, First Vice President of GRNMA, made this known during an appearance on Newsfile.
“We expect government to hold up its end of the bargain regarding our conditions of service, for which reason we decided to suspend our strike action,” Akolgo stressed.
The GRNMA suspended its nationwide strike on June 13 after “fruitful” negotiations with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and government representatives. However, concerns linger as the government claims the GH¢2 billion needed to meet nurses’ demands isn’t budgeted for until 2026.
“We are not going to prejudge what will happen,” Akolgo said, expressing cautious optimism about the government’s intentions. “We remain positive and hope that the right thing will be done for nurses and midwives.”
A follow-up meeting is scheduled for June 26 to determine the next steps. Akolgo’s words suggest the GRNMA’s patience is not infinite, leaving the possibility of another strike action on the table.
