The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed Sofo Rashid Tanko-Computer, Acting CEO of GIFEC, to stop using the “Dr” title, citing lack of academic justification.
“The use of such titles, particularly where they lack formal academic validation, can be misleading and is inconsistent with the established academic protocols governing the conferment and use of academic distinctions in Ghana,” GTEC’s letter stated.
In an official letter dated June 3, 2025, GTEC’s Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, expressed concern over Tanko-Computer’s continued use of the title, describing it as “misleading.”
GTEC instructed Tanko-Computer to remove the title from all platforms and provide evidence of removal. “Academic titles must be earned and properly conferred by recognised institutions, either locally or internationally,” the Commission emphasized.
The Commission warned against unsubstantiated title usage among public figures, copying the letter to the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President.
