The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has announced strict enforcement of the National Vehicle Homologation and Conformity Assessment Programme starting 1st October, 2026.
In a public notice dated Wednesday, 5th August, 2026, the GSA said the programme has been in operation since 2020. However, full enforcement of the applicable national vehicle standards, including Ghana Standard 4510 which covers requirements for the importation of used vehicles, will now take effect.
According to the Authority, the move is to ensure that all vehicles imported, assembled or manufactured in Ghana meet national safety, quality and environmental standards.
“The Programme is intended to ensure that all vehicles imported into, assembled or manufactured in Ghana comply with the applicable national safety, quality and environmental standards,” the statement said.
The GSA added that it also “seeks to protect consumers from unsafe, substandard and environmentally harmful vehicles while promoting a safer, cleaner and more regulated automotive industry.
”Effective 1st October 2026, all new vehicle manufacturers and assemblers, as well as used vehicle importers, distributors and dealers, must register with the GSA. All new vehicle models will be required to be homologated, while every used vehicle unit must conform to the applicable Ghana Standards before shipment to Ghana.
The Authority warned that “vehicles that do not meet the prescribed requirements will not be permitted for importation into the country on arrival. ”The GSA however clarified that this does not amount to a ban on used vehicles. “It is worth noting that this does not constitute a ban on the importation of used vehicles,” the notice stated.
The Authority urged all stakeholders to familiarize themselves with the requirements and take steps to comply ahead of the deadline.
