The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has assured the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of maximum security during its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, with at least 70 police officers to be deployed at each polling center nationwide.
Speaking at a Peace Pact signing by the five NPP flagbearer aspirants on Thursday, January 22, the IGP stated that aside from Bawku—where military backup has been requested—police will lead security operations across the country, supported by senior officers on the ground.
“We have enough police personnel on the field, with the exception of Bawku, where we may need military support,” IGP Yohuno said. “We are assuring you that at least 70 is the minimum number of police personnel that will be stationed at each polling station.”
In the same ceremony, NPP Elections Committee Chairman Joseph Osei Owusu called on all aspirants to commit to accepting the primary results and supporting the eventual winner.
“We want the contestants to affirm that the process has been transparent, inclusive, and fair, and to commit to accepting the results,” he stated. “This will enable party members to campaign and vote freely.”
He described the peace pact as a binding agreement “between the party, the aspirants, and God,” aimed at strengthening the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The five aspirants are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyepong.
