Builsa North MP James Agalga has formally taken over as Majority Leader in Parliament, following his selection by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Caucus.
His assumption of office follows the appointment of his predecessor, Mahama Ayariga, as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The NDC formally informed Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin of the changes to its parliamentary leadership, paving the way for Mr Agalga to begin his new role.
Addressing Parliament after taking office on Thursday, August 27, Mr Agalga promised to lead the Majority Caucus through consultation and cooperation, particularly in its dealings with the Minority.
He assured Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and his colleagues that he would remain open to dialogue and compromise where necessary.
Mr Agalga said his approach would be aimed at helping Parliament function effectively while advancing the government’s agenda.
“We can make compromises as and when necessary. And I assure you, I will give it to you. I would reach out, I would consult,” he said.
He nevertheless stressed that his leadership would remain focused on supporting President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda and delivering on the government’s priorities.
The new Majority Leader is expected to steer the NDC Caucus through the remainder of the parliamentary session while maintaining engagement with the opposition on matters before the House.
