Supreme Court nominee Justice Edward Amoako Asante has reaffirmed his commitment to judicial independence, saying judges must decide cases based strictly on the evidence and the law, irrespective of who appointed them.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, Justice Asante said judges take an oath to ensure fairness and equal treatment for all persons who appear before the courts.
He stressed that judicial decisions should not be influenced by personal relationships or pressure from appointing authorities.
“Judges decide on cases by the facts before them; then you apply the law to the facts,” he said.
Justice Asante also emphasised the importance of independence of mind, saying it enables judges to withstand external influences and uphold their responsibilities.
“Independence of mind is very important,” he added, maintaining that it had helped him remain committed to performing his judicial duties without undue influence.
