The President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at KNUST, Professor Eric Abavare, has launched a scathing attack on NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah over his recent comments on the fight against galamsey.
Asiedu Nketiah had expressed concerns that declaring a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas could suspend constitutional rights. However, Prof. Abavare strongly disagreed, describing the NDC Chairman’s comments as “reckless” and inconsistent with his party’s earlier stance.
“Were you in Ghana when a state of emergency was declared in Bawku? Was the Constitution also not suspended then?” Abavare questioned in a Facebook post. He pointed out the NDC’s previous calls for a state of emergency to tackle illegal mining, suggesting Asiedu Nketiah had changed his position.
“What a 419 swindle of Ghanaians by the NDC Chairman,” Abavare added, invoking the memory of those who lost their lives in the fight against galamsey. “I condemn your statement in the strongest terms possible and feel very sad too by it.”
