The Chiefs and people of Kroboland, comprising Yilo Krobo, Manya Krobo, Upper Manya Krobo and Asuogyaman, have issued a 7-day ultimatum demanding an apology from the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Constituency, Hon. Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, for making unsavory remarks against Eastern Regional Minister, Madam Rita Akosua Awatey Adjei, and Krobos in general.
The demand arises from comments Hon. Okyere Baafi allegedly made regarding the Regional Minister’s Krobo ethnic background.
Alleged ethnocentric/tribal remarks made against the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, have triggered tension in Kroboland.
In a press conference on Thursday, March 16, 2026, addressed by the District Chief Executive for Upper Manya Krobo, Lawyer Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer, the people of Kroboland expressed displeasure over unsavory remarks made by Hon. Okyere Baafi against the Eastern Regional Minister and Krobos in general.
The comments have sparked public outcry, with chiefs, queen mothers, and religious bodies calling on the lawmaker to render an unqualified apology to the minister and, by extension, the Krobo people. The MP has so far refused.
Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer did not mince words:
“It is rather unfortunate for a lawmaker to make such unsavory remarks against the Regional Minister. For some of us, we are not surprised. This is the same MP who, during last year’s Akwatia by-election, claimed he had gone to heaven and God told him the NDC would lose. He vowed to resign if it didn’t happen, but the election did not go in favor of the NPP and the lawmaker did not abide by his vow. This man is now being punished by the Holy Spirit, and that is the testimony we are witnessing now.”
Lawer added that the MP’s attack on the MCE for New Juaben South, who also serves as Dean of all MMDCEs in the country, was an attack on all 261 MMDCEs.
“For attacking the Dean of all 261 MMDCEs in the country, he has attacked all of us MMDCEs. Therefore, we are all coming after him, so he should stand firm. Some of us can’t go to heaven as the lawmaker claims he has been, but we know what to do for heaven to listen to us.”
Traditional leaders, chiefs, queen mothers from all four Krobo enclaves, and well-meaning Krobos attended to make their voices heard. They stressed the urgent need for Hon. Okyere Baafi to render an unqualified apology to the minister and the Krobo people. Failure to do so, they warned, will stir the anger of the Krobos toward the lawmaker.
