Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has commended Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for his integrity, honesty and forthrightness.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, Mr Ayariga said his dealings with Mr Afenyo-Markin over the past one and a half years had shown him to be a principled and committed parliamentarian.
He acknowledged that Mr Afenyo-Markin consistently defended the Minority’s position and challenged the government, but said this was part of his responsibility as Minority Leader.
“You can trust that he will call trouble. You can trust that he will push his side’s position,” Mr Ayariga said.
He explained that he viewed such disagreements as a normal part of parliamentary democracy.
“He’s just playing his role. So let him play it. I’ll play mine,” he added.
Mr Ayariga thanked Mr Afenyo-Markin for the openness and directness that characterised their interactions, saying, “I’ve come to know you as a person of integrity and honesty.”
He also praised the Minority Leader’s resilience, noting that he remained persistent even when faced with opposition.
“I know that you are very resilient. You never give up,” he said.
Mr Ayariga further acknowledged the Minority’s contribution to parliamentary business, noting that despite intense debates and disagreements, the caucus had at times supported government proposals and helped facilitate key approvals.
He expressed hope that the constructive relationship he developed with Mr Afenyo-Markin would continue with his successor, James Agalga.
