President John Dramani Mahama has urged restraint and constructive engagement in Ghana’s ongoing discussions on LGBTQ+ issues, stating that although the subject is important, it should not overshadow the country’s more pressing socio-economic challenges.
Speaking during a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30, the President described the LGBTQ+ debate as a sensitive and emotionally charged issue—even in countries with long-standing liberal traditions.
Mahama emphasised the importance of calm and respectful conversations guided by Ghana’s national values. According to him, government priorities remain focused on improving the living conditions of citizens.
“We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs such as education, health care, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” he said, stressing that addressing these fundamental challenges must remain at the forefront of national attention.
The President also acknowledged that the ongoing debate surrounding the private member’s bill in Parliament reflects a wide range of opinions within Ghanaian society. He noted that any decision on the matter must remain consistent with the country’s constitutional framework, human rights obligations, and the need to preserve national unity.
“While there are strong and differing views within our society, we believe that issues must be addressed through democratic processes, our core values, dialogue, and the rule of law,” Mahama stated.
He further recognised reactions from the international community, including recent developments involving institutions abroad, and emphasised the need for mutual respect and engagement in global relations.
Mahama concluded that Ghana will continue to balance its constitutional principles with its cultural context while maintaining constructive relationships with international partners.
