President John Dramani Mahama has vehemently condemned the brutal killing of a military officer in Bawku, as well as the subsequent military reprisal that left numerous residents, including women and children, injured. He made these remarks during his visit to the Upper East Region on Thursday, March 20, 2025, as part of his “Thank You Tour.”
President Mahama emphasized, “I strongly condemn the recent murder of a Ghanaian soldier in Bawku. Our military personnel are peacekeepers deployed to protect human life, dignity, and property. It is absolutely unacceptable for them to become targets in a conflict they are not a party to.”
He continued, “Similarly, I condemn the heavy-handed military response that resulted in the assault and injury of numerous innocent civilians. While I understand the outrage and grief over the loss of a colleague, we must exercise restraint and employ effective intelligence gathering to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.”
President Mahama extended his condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and sympathies to those injured in the military counteraction. He stressed that Ghana’s progress relies on collective efforts toward a shared vision of prosperity, emphasizing that the Upper East Region deserves its fair share of development.

The President also commended the Asantehene for his mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict and urged the factions involved to cooperate with the Otumfuo.
