The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for apprehending a suspect in connection with the murder of renowned investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and remanded into police custody until April 1, 2025.
The GJA has been in close communication with senior police officials to stay updated on the arrest and prosecution process. The association expressed its gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for their tireless efforts in advancing the case.
This arrest marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for Ahmed Suale, who was assassinated on January 16, 2019. The GJA noted that this development is a direct result of their persistent advocacy for action on the case.
“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of Suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad, who have remained shocked by his murder,” the GJA stated.
The unresolved murder of Ahmed Suale has had a profound impact on Ghana’s ranking on the World Press Freedom Index. The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to seeing justice served and is closely monitoring the case’s progress.
The association recalled its previous ultimatum to take the case to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice if concrete action was not taken by the end of March 2025.
“In the coming days, we shall be engaging with the Police leadership for more details about the prosecution of the suspect and further investigations into the murder case, after which we shall update the public on our intended march to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice,” the GJA stated.
The GJA also demanded updates on other unresolved cases of assaults against journalists, including the case of Latif Iddrisu, which it has earmarked for submission to the ECOWAS Court.
The GJA has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the arrest and prosecution of the suspect. Both organizations have expressed their commitment to pursuing the case on international platforms to seek justice for Ahmed Suale.
The GJA remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice, emphasizing that this development must be the first step in ensuring accountability for crimes against journalists in Ghana.
