President John Dramani Mahama has asked the School Feeding Programme (SFP) to take up surplus eggs on the market as a short-term fix for the egg glut.
The instruction follows appeals from egg traders in parts of the country for government action on a trade standoff with Burkina Faso, which has blocked egg exports for over two months.
The halt has caused a surplus locally, hitting prices and putting the incomes of poultry farmers and suppliers at risk.
President Mahama, speaking during a citizen engagement at the University of Development Studies (USD) on Sunday, April 19, in the Northern Region as part of his resetting tour, said the government was working to fix export issues.
“As I speak now, there’s a glut in the production of eggs. Poultry farmers are complaining that they can’t get a market for their eggs. And so, because of the poultry programmes and all that we’ve done, the supply of eggs has increased. And that’s why I’ve said that we should find a way of getting the School Feeding Programme to absorb the eggs and give it to our children to eat. If we can’t sell it, let our children eat the eggs,” he said
