President John Dramani Mahama has urged religious institutions, particularly churches, to create safe spaces for children and vulnerable people, stressing the need for responsible conduct and accountability among religious leaders.
Speaking at the ongoing World Assemblies of God Congress 2026 in Accra, the President said churches must uphold the trust placed in them by ensuring that people seeking refuge, guidance and support receive the necessary protection and care.
“Let us all be mentors to our younger generation. Let us be mentors who listen, offer opportunities to serve and set an example of integrity that these young people can follow. The church should also be a safe place for children and vulnerable people,” he said.
He added that spiritual leadership comes with an obligation to protect those who place their trust in religious institutions.
“Spiritual authority entails a duty of care; we must safeguard that trust through responsible conduct, clear conduct and accountability,” the President said.
Three-day congress opens in Accra
President Mahama’s appeal came at the opening of the three-day congress, which runs until October 16 under the theme, “Commissioned: One Mandate, Every Nation”.
The programme features plenary sessions, workshops and revival rallies, with the opening session held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre.
The event is the 10th Triennial World Assemblies of God Fellowship Congress and marks the first time the gathering is being hosted on the African continent.
It brings together church leaders and ministers from across the world to discuss the Church’s mission and its role in communities globally.
Organisers expect more than 10,000 participants
Ahead of the congress, the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, said organisers expected more than 10,000 participants from approximately 100 countries.
The gathering is expected to provide a platform for religious leaders to strengthen collaboration and deliberate on the Church’s mission across nations.
President Mahama’s call for safe and accountable religious institutions highlights the responsibility of churches to protect vulnerable members of their communities while maintaining public trust.
