The Mahama Accra Reset initiative has launched an 18-member high-level panel to drive reforms in global health governance, aiming to bolster equity and sovereignty for Global South nations.
The initiative, championed by President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to position Africa at the forefront of shaping global health systems and policies.
The panel, co-chaired by Peter Piot, El Hadj As Sy, Nisia Trinidade, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin, will craft concrete proposals to revamp the global health architecture, addressing criticisms that it marginalises Global South governments.
A High-Level Consultative Group will facilitate engagement with key institutions, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Trade Organisation (WTO), Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, African Union Development Agency, and the International Finance Corporation.
The panel is expected to commence work immediately, with its terms of reference to be refined and adopted through inputs from global platforms such as the World Health Assembly and the United Nations General Assembly. Former UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé, has been appointed Special Advisor to the panel and Envoy to the co-chairs, bringing decades of experience in navigating the global health landscape.
The initiative aims to amplify African and Global South voices in global health decision-making, prioritising fairness, accountability, and shared responsibility
