The Minority in Parliament is urging the government to release full contract details of its major road infrastructure programme, the ‘Big Push’, citing transparency and accountability concerns.
This follows a report by The Fourth Estate highlighting potential procurement flaws and excessive sole sourcing, which may have driven up costs.
Speaking to journalists on March 24, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Roads and Transportation Committee, Mr. Kennedy Osei Nyarko, acknowledged the Big Push’s potential to boost connectivity and economic growth.
However, he said recent revelations have sparked public concern, requiring immediate government clarification.Publishing full contract details, including contractors’ identities, scope of work, and unit costs, is essential for restoring public trust, he said.
“We strongly believe the government must urgently publish these contracts to allow Ghanaians assess the policy and promote transparency,” he urged. The Fourth Estate reported that Roads Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza oversaw 81 sole-sourced contracts worth over GHS73 billion in seven months. Ghana GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi defended the government’s use of sole sourcing, saying there’s “no evidence” of wrongdoing, and that contracts were lawful and approved by relevant authorities.
