Mystery Deaths Rock Kobedi School as Traditional Leaders Order Emergency Closure

Fear and uncertainty have engulfed the Kobedi community in the Sunyani West Municipality following the sudden and mysterious death of the headmistress of Kobedi AME Zion Basic School, Madam Gladys Dorlo Batinge, forcing authorities to suspend academic activities for one week.

According to reports by Christian Ofori Kumah on Friday, May 22, 2026, tensions in the farming community near Chiraa have escalated as residents struggle to understand the disturbing pattern surrounding the deaths of successive school heads.

Madam Gladys had reportedly been appointed to replace the former headmaster, who also died under unusual circumstances in September 2025. Community members say her sudden death in April 2026 has intensified fears and speculation among residents.

Speaking publicly on the matter, the Queen Mother of Kobedi, Nana Ameyaa Ansu Gyeabour, disclosed that the school was temporarily closed to allow traditional authorities to perform customary cleansing rites aimed at preventing further tragedy.

According to the Queen Mother, some residents believe the deaths may be linked to a spiritual curse allegedly invoked by an individual connected to the nearby Nzor community over accusations of financial extortion involving certain school authorities.

She explained that the traditional council is actively engaging stakeholders to resolve the underlying tensions, restore calm in the community, and ensure a safe environment for students and teachers before classes resume.

Meanwhile, the Krotihene of Kobedi, Nana Korang Amoah Asimpi, has criticized sections of the media over their handling of reports concerning the school’s closure and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
