Heavy overnight rains have caused severe traffic congestion across Accra on Monday, 29 June, leaving several major roads heavily gridlocked and significantly disrupting the morning commute.
As floodwaters continued to rise in parts of the capital, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) urged residents to prioritise their safety by avoiding flood-prone areas and remaining indoors where possible.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, the Director of NADMO’s Inspectorate Division, Richard Amuyatey, said emergency response teams had been deployed to affected areas and appealed to the public to cooperate with safety directives.
“We are on the ground, and so we are responding to all. What they need is to stay indoors where they are to stay safe,” he said.
Mr Amuyatey cautioned residents against walking through floodwaters and warned motorists and motorcyclists not to attempt to drive or ride through submerged roads, stressing that such actions pose serious risks to life and property.
He further advised commuters who have been stranded by the flooding to suspend their journeys and move to safer locations until conditions improve.
Residents who have not yet left their homes were also encouraged to remain indoors until the rainfall subsides and the situation stabilises.
Authorities continue to monitor developments across affected communities as persistent rainfall disrupts transportation and raises concerns over flooding in several parts of the capital.
Meanwhile, NADMO has urged residents requiring emergency assistance to contact the national emergency line on 112 or call 0302 964 884 for support.
