Heavy rains have severely disrupted traffic on the Accra–Kumasi Highway after floodwaters submerged sections of the major roadway, bringing movement to a complete standstill.
Floodwaters reportedly swept across the highway, effectively cutting through the carriageway and leaving hundreds of motorists stranded in long queues on both sides of the route.
Commuters faced significant delays as vehicles were unable to proceed due to rising water levels on the busy intercity highway, according to JoyNews’ Naa Morkor.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, said weather forecasts indicated that the rains would persist until midday, underscoring the need for the public to exercise caution.
He urged residents to prioritise their personal safety by avoiding unnecessary travel and steering clear of flood-prone areas until conditions improve.
The Minister also called on all emergency response and security agencies to work together to safeguard lives and protect property as authorities continue to monitor the impact of the persistent rainfall.
Officials have advised motorists and commuters to remain vigilant and comply with safety directives while emergency services respond to affected areas.
