A day meant for celebration has turned tragic in the Krachi East Municipality after a vehicle carrying students from an Inter-Circuit Sports Tournament was involved in a devastating road accident.
The crash occurred along the Tokuroano–Dormabin stretch as the students were returning from games held at Adokwanta. By Saturday evening, nearly 50 students were receiving treatment at various health facilities across the Oti Region, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Scene of Chaos
Witnesses described a harrowing scene as the vehicle, reportedly carrying dozens of young athletes, veered off the road. The force of the impact allegedly threw some students from the vehicle, leaving residents and first responders scrambling to assist.
Emergency personnel, supported by Good Samaritans, worked quickly to rescue survivors from the wreckage. Given the high number of casualties, victims were distributed across multiple health centres to prevent any single facility from being overwhelmed.
Multi-Facility Response
Medical sources indicate that the injured were triaged and assigned to facilities based on the severity of their injuries:
- Worawora Government Hospital is handling the most critical cases, including those requiring surgical intervention.
- Dormabin Health Centre is treating dozens of students with fractures and deep lacerations.
- Tokuroano Health Facility is stabilising students with less severe injuries.
Doctors at Worawora say several students remain in unstable condition as efforts continue to save lives.
Community in Shock
The accident has sent shockwaves through the Krachi East education circuit. Parents who had earlier gathered to support their children at the sporting event are now moving between hospitals seeking updates.
While authorities are still confirming official casualty figures, the scale of the tragedy has renewed concerns about safety standards in the transportation of students for school sports competitions across Ghana.
